Experiences of Corps of Engineers in Compaction of Hot Asphalt Mixtures Available to Purchase

This paper discusses the historical development and present procedures used by the Corps of Engineers for specifying, obtaining, and evaluating density of hot mix asphalt concrete. To obtain satisfactory density requires that proper equipment and experienced personnel be used for construction of the asphalt concrete. Experiences with various rollers and rolling techniques that have proven satisfactory are discussed. The lack of density obtained in longitudinal joints has always been a problem in airfield construction, and on most airfield pavements initial damage begins in these longitudinal joints. Statistical quality control procedures are used to insure that unbiased evaluation of in-place density is obtained. Control charts are used to record density results and to identify trends in density that may indicate potential problems before they become significant.
