Wear tests are performed for a variety of reasons: to gain an understanding of the wear process, to determine the effects of variables, to characterize materials, and to select materials for specific applications. Selection of test rigs and procedures is only difficult where simulation of an application is necessary. Under these circumstances it is necessary to consider the important variables which affect the wear process; primary consideration should be given to the surface temperature. Many types of test rigs are available to make such evaluations. The development of a standard wear test is considered to be urgently needed.
